This vigorous rose bears cup shaped, magenta-pink flowers from July to September. The gently fragrant blooms are followed by attractive scarlet rosehips that make a lovely autumn feature. The glossy green foliage turns to buttery yellow in autumn, to provide superb late season colour. Rosa rugosa ‘Rubra’ has particularly thorny stems which makes it an ideal boundary hedge for preventing intruders. This useful species shrub rose makes a lovely addition to cottage gardens and wildlife areas. Height and spread: 1.5m (5′).
Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. Rosehips and petals can be used in making syrups and the petals will add flavour to cold drinks or fruit dishes. For more details about edible flowers click here.
Companion planting: Try growing roses with garlic, chives, thyme or mint to help deter aphids and blackfly.
