A dual purpose plum producing some of the finest quality dessert fruits. In August, the large, red fruits begin to ripen. Pick them slightly underripe, while they are paler in colour, for use in the kitchen. They are best left on the tree for eating fresh, until they have turned to a dark crimson colourwith a sweeter, juicier flavour. Plum ‘Avalon’ is a recently developed variety. Crops are not especially heavy, but still quite acceptable, and well worth growing for the flavour, which is a great improvement on the traditional ‘Victoria’ Plum.
- Plum rootstocks:
- VVA1 – Semi dwarf reaching a mature height of up to 2.5m (8′)
- St. Julien – Semi vigorous reaching a mature height of up to 4.5m (14′)
This variety is partially self-fertile. For the heaviest crops it is best grown with another variety. If you only have room for one tree then make sure that a neighbour has a tree close by that can act as a suitable pollinator.
Estimated time to cropping once planted: 2 years.
Estimated time to best yields: 4 years.
