Liriope muscari ‘Variegata’ is a valuable plant due to its ability to colonise challenging areas in dry shade where little else will grow, providing foliage and flower colour plus evergreen, weed-suppressing foliage.
Providing your soil is neutral to acid, this vigorous perennial will carpet the ground with spreading clumps of arching, evergreen, grass-like foliage. The blade-like leaves are striped cream and green, bringing light and colour into drab corners. In late summer and autumn, Liriope muscari ‘Variegata’ bears upright spikes of striking violet flowers that contrast beautifully with the creamy foliage. As the flowers fade they are replaced by small black fruits that provide further late-season interest.
This adaptable plant even copes with full shade and with rooty ground beneath trees, shrubs and hedges. It makes an excellent subject for path edges and a useful addition to winter containers. Drought tolerant once established, it is deer and rabbit resistant and virtually pest and disease free.
