A compact, upright tree with pink buds that open to form attractive white flowers, followed in autumn by bunches of red, conical fruits, lasting all winter long, providing food for wildlife. In spring, foliage appears a glossy mahogany-red, turning dark green in summer, then yellow in autumn. Malus ‘Red Obelisk’ is an excellent performer in any garden, providing show-stopping colour over several seasons. The obelisk apples are also great for making crab apple jelly. Height: 4m (13′). Spread: 1.8m (6′).
Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.
Generally crab apples are too tart to eat raw, but their apple flavour becomes intense when cooked. Cab apples have high pectin content great for jam and jellies, and are a perfect ingredient for chutneys.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
