Commonly known as the Purple Filbert, this hardy deciduous shrub gives plenty of seasonal interest. From February its golden yellow catkins drip from bare branches creating lovely silhouettes in winter borders. As the spring progresses the purple, heart-shaped foliage adds a splash of colour, and tubular husks form to surround the edible nuts. Corylus maxima ‘Purpurea’ makes a superb specimen plant for cottage garden, and woodland areas. Like all Hazelnuts with coloured foliage, this variety is most vibrant when grown in full sun. Height: 6m (20’). Spread: 5m (16’).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
