One of the best yellow-leaved Berberis, the golden foliage of Berberis thunbergii ‘Maria’ forms a lively contrast to darker leaved shrubs and is less subject to greening than other varieties, retaining its glorious colour all season before blazing orange-red in autumn. Berberis thunbergii ‘Maria’ forms an upright, columnar shrub clothed in small oval leaves which emerge red in spring before turning bright gold. The yellow flowers in March and April are fairly inconspicuous, but rich in nectar, attracting plenty of pollinating insects to the garden, whilst birds enjoy its dense, thorny cover, making it a useful shrub for attracting wildlife. Robust, hardy and low maintenance, it’s ideal for providing bright foliage colour in small gardens and containers. RHS Award of Garden Merit. Height: 100-150 cm (48-72″). Spread: 50-100cm (20-48in).
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
