A choice exotic plant with extraordinary looks! Abutilon megapotamicum bears red and yellow lantern-shaped flowers which dangle prettily from long stalks. Each lantern unfolds like an origami parcel, revealing protruding anthers which resemble the clanger of a bell. The dainty flowers are complemented by elegant, heart-shaped, semi-evergreen leaves which clothe a framework of fine branches. The flowering season is impressively long, with blooms produced continuously from spring until autumn.
Despite its exotic looks, Abutilon megapotamicum is one of the hardiest of species Abutilons. It can be grown outdoors in coastal and mild southern parts of the UK, where it will survive down to about -10C. It is ideally grown on a warm and sheltered South-facing wall where its fine branches can be trained as an espalier. Alternatively, grow it in a patio container and bring it into the greenhouse or conservatory for the winter.
